Frequently Asked Questions
The Actual Experience BBFix Project is a unique project that will
analyse the performance of home broadband internet services
in terms of real human experience rather than speed. Not even an expert can calculate what you will experience from measured broadband speed or other technical metrics, but Actual Experience can provide that insight.
Actual Experience technology is based on 10 years of research at
Queen Mary, University of London, UK, and is used by ISPs, businesses and even the government of the Falkland Islands!
By participating in the BBFix project, you will discover how your home broadband service performs in the most meaningful way possible: in terms of your actual experience. Over time, we will be able to feedback information to you that will:
- Health-check your WiFi and Internet Service Provider (ISP)
- Find out how your ISP compares with others (measured speed is a misleading guide to actual experience)
- Help ISPs to improve the service they provide
All of this in terms of your actual experience of real applications.
It's very simple. You just download and install the Actual Experience measurement Agent on your home computer. There is no need to leave you computer on any more than you would normally. The Agent runs invisibly as a Windows Service (Windows XP, Vista and 7 only at the moment). That's it! There's no need to do anything else. You can forget about this until you hear from us with the first set of results.
No, the Agent works invisibly in the background and does not have any impact on the performance of your computer or your Internet connection.
The Agent does not record, in any way, what you do. Instead, it periodically sends small test messages to Actual Experience Reference Servers. More information can be found in our Privacy Policy.
Just enter your email address above and you're in! You will be asked to provide a few bits of information about your broadband service. This information will only be used in communication with you, and to help us collate measurement results by broadband provider, package and location. You may not hear from us immediately because we process each applicant individually.
When your application has been processed, you will receive email instructions on how to install the Actual Experience measurement Agent.
Simply follow the instructions in the email. It is extremely simple to set up. The software runs in the background, has no impact on computer performance, and does not collect any data that could infringe your privacy.
You can withdraw from the project at any time. If you have installed the Agent, simply click the Windows "Start" menu, then "All Programs", then "Actual Experience" then "Uninstall Perception Agent".
The BBFix project is being run by
Actual Experience Ltd, a spin-out company from the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Queen Mary, University of London, UK.
