Broadband Users!
By joining our BBFix project, we make the same technology that we use to help large corporations available to you (for personal use) to help improve your broadband experience of real applications. Over time, we will be able to:
More Information
The BBFix Project aims to improve your broadband experience. Frustrated broadband consumers blame poor performance on their Internet service provider (or ISP). Sometimes this is fair, but often the problem exists elsewhere. Actual Experience Analytics detects only the problems that people notice, and builds a picture over time of where these problems are and what can be done to improve your real-world experience. For more than 50% of broadband users, WiFi impairs experience in a noticeable way, and discovering this is often the first step towards viewing content or making use of services that "just didn't work before". For others, their experience is impaired by their ISP or other parts of the Internet. Here we can help too (although it takes longer than a WiFi fix).By correlating data from lots of our software Agents around the world, we can identify which bits of the Internet are causing the problems that people notice. For instance, one part of the Internet might cause noticeable problems for Skype, another might cause problems for Google, yet another might cause problems for YouTube. This takes a lot of processing power in our data centre in Bristol, UK. When we identify a troublesome part of the Internet, we work with its owner, providing them with engineering information so that they can improve the service they provide to you and others. For this complex analysis, ISPs are willing to pay money, and that is how we earn our living!
- Health-check your WiFi and broadband service - Internet services are complex, but we will be able to build a picture of where real improvements in your experience can be made;
- Provide a personalised broadband benchmark - National ratings and speed tests can help, but your own experience depends on what applications you use and where you live;
- Help broadband providers to improve their services - By analysing the huge amounts of national and international BBFix data we collect, we help broadband providers to pinpoint problems and improve their services (this is how we earn a living).
Why is this project unique? It is difficult for anyone – even an expert – to understand what your experience of an application will be from a speed test. Ten years of research at Queen Mary, University of London, mean that we can analyse your broadband, your home WiFi and the global internet from the perspective that is most important and meaningful to you: how real applications perform across your broadband service.
There are no costs and, apart from simple installation of our (Windows only, for now) software on a home computer, no effort required on your part. The software does not see or record, in any way, what you do. Instead, it periodically sends small test messages to Actual Experience Reference Servers. It will run automatically and invisibly (because it runs as a Windows Service). It has no impact on computer performance. There is no need to leave your computer on any more than you would normally. You can withdraw from the project at any time. In short, we recommend you install our software and think nothing more of it until you hear from us with some initial results.
